About Me

A small peek into my life, and what inspires me to create

Marianne Fournier

I knew from an early age I possessed the love and desire to create. My earliest memory, at age three, was reclaiming my grandma's sewing scraps that I fashioned into clothing and accessories for my beloved dolls. My curiosity in textiles morphed into a passion for sewing and embroidery. For the next 30 years, my family and teaching career took the front seat, which caused me to hit the pause button. Retirement reignited my interest and brought me back to my roots - my love of textiles.

Fast-forward, I discovered the medium of felted fibers. This unique medium got the creative juices flowing and offered an infinite number of possibilities. I loved 'painting' with fibers and the unpredictability of the way they fuse together with the traditional wet felting method. The felting creations prompted the introduction of stitching and other embellishments that allowed me to add further detail and interest into my work.

A Look At Some of My Works

How it Works

Ever wondered how I create my fiber art?
1
Visualize the picture in your mind. That picture can be inspired by a photograph, a memory, an experience, or simply an idea.
2
Gather a collection of different coloured wool and silk fibers. Pull strands of fiber and layer them like a painted picture. Continue layering the fibers on top of each other to create the desired texture and depth of your 'painting.'
3
Apply warm soapy water to shrink the fibers. Using elbow grease and some magical fingers, rub and roll to fuse the image into a 'felt-like' state, thus bringing the creation to life.
4
Hand or machine stitching, as well as other embellishments are introduced to add additional dimension and texture to the picture creation. Don't fret if the final product is different from the original thought, it is one of the querks you must embrace with the wet felting technique.

Croatia

Even though they didn't win the World Cup, my husband and I are still extremely excited to be able to go to Croatia and travel around, experiencing the rich culture and learning about the many different traditional foods, maybe even trying out some octopus salad!
